Quick & Easy Home Cleaning Tips

Shortcuts to a Clean House

clean house tips

Get your house ready for the holidays - or any day with these quick & easy cleaning tips:

The Swiffer broom is an incredibly quick way to clean tile or wood floors.

Get organized first – so everything has a “home” or spot where it belongs.   It makes cleaning up faster when everyone knows where to put items.   Also: An organized home appears cleaner than a clean home that is cluttered!

Joetta Tucker, www.myorganizingfriend.com

A lot of dirt comes from outside, one of the best ways to keep the dirt there is to make sure you have a good dirt trapping floor mat that is washable at every entrance to your house.   These will take hold of the dirt and keep it out of your house and outside where it should be.

Corey Palmer, http://www.floormats.co.uk

After folding laundry, place the items in the laundry basket in the reverse order according to what room that they will be put away; this way the items on top will be ready to be put away first.   Organization reduces trips and saves time.

Since time is usually of the essence, I find that if I know company is coming soon, I quickly spray the guest bathrooms with a cleaning spray and while the chemicals work their magic.   I then run to the foyer and living room and will take a laundry basket and throw the random items (shoes, gloves, hats, dog leashes, bags, kid toys, etc.) into the basket and hide the basket for later to sort through. It’s like cleaning two birds with one stone.

To clean the kitchen and bathrooms: Pour your organic all purpose cleaner on two hand size bath towels on one end only. Then literally run circles over all surfaces. The right hand moves counter clockwise and the left is going clockwise. Do this across counters, up and down the fridge or shower and around the toilet. If you need to dry a surface flip the towels to the dry side and go. Redampen the towels when needed. You can clean an average size bathroom in 10 to 12 minutes with this method.

Before company comes wash doors from top to bottom including washing the glass. I have given this tip to many friends and they have called me after and told it worked like a charm. There is just something about clean doors!

Debra A. Verville

I devised a system that breaks down my long list of household chores into manageable daily duties. This simple routine helps me handle the workload and it gives me a clear "to-do" list for the week. Every morning I know what has to get done and I can then plan the rest of the day accordingly. I find that sticking to this routine actually gives me more time with my family - and time with my family is always my first priority!

Baskets with handles: keep one basket at bottom of stairs and one at top. Throughout the day, everyone puts their stuff to go upstairs in the bottom one, when you head upstairs, grab it, put the stuff away on the 2nd floor and then do the same with the basket on the top floor. I have one of these baskets at the top (bottom) of each staircase in my house. My 2 kids (ages 8 & 10) love the ease of placing things in these designated spaces. I love that they can help clean up by simply carrying these baskets up & down.

A couple years ago, I started requiring my kids to help clean up after dinner. At first they protested, but I explained to them that I took the time to buy the food and cook it for them, the least they could do to show their appreciation would be to help me with the cleaning. After the first week or so, it just became the routine and the griping stopped!
